Australia is “old and flat”– well….

geography May 30, 2015

Just watched a great UK documentary on Hidden Britain where they went up Mt Ben Nevis – the highest mountain in the British Isles. I knew that Australia was very old and eroded away. So that our mountains were not high compared to Europe and the USA etc. But I was surprised when they said that Mt Ben Nevis was 1,344 metres. I thought “that doesn’t seem that high”.  So time for some quick research – on the Victorian and Australian peaks –  and a bit of Excel graphing. Turns out I was right:

Notes:

  • The first 3 are my local ones; only about an hour from Melbourne and regular bushwalking targets
  • Donna Buang is (arguably) the closest snow to us in Winter. Toboggan level, but not really skiing. However, it’s only 93km from Melbourne in the Yarra Valley.
  • Hotham is a proper ski venue, 370 km away.
  • Bogong is the highest one here in Victoria and very rugged.
  • Kosciusko is the highest in Australia
