Interesting YouTubers
Besides podcasts, I also subscribe to a few YouTube content makers. Now, this may come as a surprise, but they tend to be in the music and maths areas. I know, it shocked me too. Here’s a small sample, with their own Description at the start:
3Blue1Brown [maths]
“3blue1brown, by Grant Sanderson, is some combination of math and entertainment, depending on your disposition. The goal is for explanations to be driven by animations and for difficult problems to be made simple with changes in perspective”
I’ve never seen such clever – and effective – use of animation to explain maths things, from the simple to the complex. Nor that style of animation. Probably because Grant developed the free software to do it! (it’s Manim” ; mathematical animations). It’s written in Python, so Manim will be high on my Teach Thyself list.
The name? Well Grant tells us because that’s the colours of one of his eyes; he has blue eyes (like all good maths/science types 🙂 ) but 1/4 segment of his right eye is…brown.
Smarter Every Day [science]
“I explore the world using science. That’s pretty much all there is to it.”
I’m not jealous of any podcasters or YouTubers. Destin here is an exception 🙂 I’d love to do what he does.
David Bennett Piano [music]
“I work full time as a pianist, working across the south of England and beyond. I’m creating educational music videos about all things interesting in music and music theory.”
I’m self taught on the piano and guitar…and now moving deeper into music theory ; self taught (of course). Despite the title, this is more about music theory and related, not so much the piano. David effortlessly explains interesting concepts with well-chosen (and illustrated) examples.
Rick Beato [music]
“Everything Music” [that’s it: DS]
Rick explains why certain songs work, including playing the original – sometimes just the Guitar, Bass, Drums, Piano parts solo – then showing us live – by playing the same Guitar, Bass, Drums, Piano bits (yes all of those instruments) to demonstrate the notes, chords and playing/production techniques used. Doubly talented: musically and the ability to clearly explain.
He also does other music-related episodes too.
Reina del Cid [music]
“Hey! I’m Reina del Cid. I’ve posting music to this YouTube channel since 2007. For the last few years, I’ve been posting a new video every Sunday, and I call it “Sunday Mornings with Reina del Cid.” I invite you to pour yourself a cup of coffee/tea/whiskey and join us each week as my friends and I discover new music, cover the classics, and share our own original music with you.”
Only stumbled on this magically talented musician recently. She’s wonderful, particularly with Toni beside her. Here’s Reina (on lead vocals) and Toni doing the lead guitar. I just love their work.
Ok, they get a 2nd clip. That’s how good they are (with extra mates):
Ok that’s enough.
I’m going to stop.
But only after this lovely, live collaboration:
