Just two things I wish I could have shown Pa Hudson
My maternal grandfather was Arthur William Hudson. He passed away, suddenly, in early September 1977. He had just turned 64. I was 16 and really only just properly getting into science and maths. That last bit is important as Pa was an engineer.
Sadly he never got to see his eldest grandchild go off to do 4 years of Physics and Maths at University, but – even more so – we obviously never got to talk about such technical/science stuff, in any adult way.
So, if I could somehow show him just two (2) modern tech items – that I’ve been using recently – what would they be?
1) My Mobile Phone
With this single device I could cover so much that has changed since 1977.
- Computers (processing chips, memory, internal storage, USB as storage and communications, screen technology, the speed of things! )
- Networking (Internet, WiFi, 4G, Bluetooth, NFC). He could read my blog for that š
- Apps and Services (using the above Networking, audio/text/video messages, The Cloud, data syncing..)
- GPS (How it works, how to use it.)
- Device Interaction (asking the phone questions, having it reply, having it calculate navigation routes – on the fly – then read them out, turn by turn, based on where I am. AR and VR. Google Translate including in-situ via camera)
- Photography and Video (he was a photographer, who taught me. Digital photography would be fascinating for him)
2) Stopping and Speeding Up Time in Stellarium … and….about those Planets…
Pa was a bushman and probably knew the night sky very well. He would be amazed at this free software on my PC. Amazing capabilities and these are just an off-the-cuff, tiny sample:
My Company … and Curse You, Elvis
My company is called Artwill Services Pty Ltd.
Just weeks after Arthur William Hudson passed away, Elvis Aaron Presley died. When Elvis passed away, I was probably still in shock and mourning, but I distinctly remember throwing an empty, plastic shampoo bottle in to the bathtub, after stepping out of the shower and hearing an Elvis story on the radio. How dare people focus on Elvis, when Pa has just left us…
