The Amazing Changes in Memory Card Prices over a Decade
This picture [1]:
…which shows the 1,000 times increase in microSD card capacity in 9 years, set me off and running about my own storage costs over that time.
Camera Storage Card
Year | Type | MB | Cost | $/MB | Comment |
2004 | CF | 100 | $200 | $2.00 | For my Nikon D70 camera. They proudly said it was the first DSLR under $2000. Which, at $1999 was true. Except you couldn’t actually use it as they didn’t give you a CF card. |
2014 | SD (HC) | 32,000 | $28 | $0.00088 | 32 GB Sandisk Ultra Class 10 (MSY 11 Dec 2014) That’s 0.088 of 1 cent. |
Hard Disk Drives are/were cheaper per MB than these little cards. If I look back another 10 years to 1994, my 340 MB (!) disk drive [2] cost me $475. So that’s $1.40 per MB. Cheaper than the CF card which was 10 years later.
