Trip: Melbourne to Mallacoota
An eastbound adventure trip to Gippsland
Firstly here’s the map and link to it: http://goo.gl/maps/C7LFj
I’d suggest 2 or 3 days (just to get there)…or even longer. It’s over 800 km – with the side trips. You can click on most pictures to enlarge them…I hope!
Melbourne to Wilsons Prom
Maybe coffee at Korumburra on the way. Or Leongatha.
Park at Tidal River settlement, ‘day walk’ carpark at the end of the road right near the beach. 30 min (easy) walk to the beautiful Little Oberon Bay (must see) :
If you are feeling a bit fit, continue on to Oberon Bay, explore the beach and back the same way, to Tidal River. This is Oberon Bay:
Also check out the Tidal River (river) itself …
..plus – via car or walk – Squeaky Beach
Stay: at the town of Foster usually.
Prom to Lakes Entrance
Stop for coffee etc wherever you feel like it . Check out the lovely Lakes Entrance area and maybe even stay the night. The Lakes themselves are worth a look or boat trip.
Buchan Caves – side trip
Follow the signs if you are interested in doing one of the tours of these wonderful caves. Quite safe and well worth it.
Cape Conran (small side trip)
Break at Orbost and then head down towards Marlo. On the Cape Conran road you will see the Snowy River as it approaches the sea. The Cape Conran beach(es) are beautiful, but not patrolled. So be careful!
Mallacoota
Finally we arrive. The tiny and quiet town is built around the huge, natural lakes which are literally a flooded valley. Where I stay, the lovely Adobe Mud Brick Flats, has a view typical of the area:
Nearby are the natural treasures of Betka Beach, where the river hits the sea and you can float on your back in it:
Or 0ne of the many wilderness beaches, like Secret Beach (an easy drive from town)
Of, if you want a little off-road adventure (nothing too hard) the huge dunes of Thurra River are worth a trip. Take water, sun screen etc:
